Health Canada Approves Moderna’s Updated COVID-19 Vaccine: What You Need to Know for the Fall
On Tuesday, Health Canada authorized Moderna’s latest COVID-19 vaccine, Spikevax, designed to protect against current variants, specifically the KP.2 subvariant of Omicron. This mRNA vaccine replaces the previous version, which was developed to target the XBB.1.5 subvariant and released last year. With fall fast approaching, this reformulated vaccine aims to bolster immunity as respiratory viruses increase during the colder months.
Why the Updated Vaccine Matters
As new variants emerge, vaccines must evolve to stay effective. Health Canada is ensuring that only the most current vaccine formulations are available by advising provinces and territories to discard older COVID-19 vaccines. This proactive approach is crucial for managing public health during the fall and winter, especially as the KP.2 and its parent variant, JN.1, remain dominant in Canada.
Other Vaccines in the Pipeline
In addition to Moderna’s Spikevax, Health Canada is reviewing two other updated COVID-19 vaccines:
- Pfizer’s Comirnaty: Another mRNA vaccine targeting the KP.2 variant.
- Novavax’s vaccine: A protein-based vaccine designed to combat the JN.1 variant.
Both are under review and have not yet been authorized, but approval could come soon.
Who Should Get the Updated Vaccine?
Moderna’s updated Spikevax has been approved for individuals aged six months and older. In May, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) provided guidelines for this fall’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign. NACI recommends prioritizing the updated vaccine for:
- Adults 65 and older
- Residents in long-term care or group living settings
- People with underlying health conditions
- Indigenous and racialized communities
- Pregnant individuals
- Essential service providers
NACI also encourages all individuals aged six months and older to consider getting vaccinated this fall, to strengthen their protection against severe illness.
Next Steps for Canada’s Vaccination Rollout
Moderna has confirmed that updated doses of Spikevax will be delivered to the Public Health Agency of Canada soon. This ensures availability for upcoming vaccination campaigns in provinces and territories, providing the most up-to-date protection to Canadians as COVID-19 continues to circulate.
As we prepare for the fall, staying informed and ensuring access to the latest vaccines will help safeguard the community against severe illness, particularly for high-risk groups.
