Because Your Health Doesn’t Take a Vacation – Even When You Do

At our travel clinic, you can see a doctor or nurse and receive recommended vaccines in the same visit whenever possible. We review your destination, activities, and health history to create a personalized travel health plan. Protect yourself before you travel by scheduling a consultation at our travel clinic in Orléans, Ottawa.

Our travel medicine professionals — including physicians and registered nurses with specialized travel health training — review your destination, activities, and health history to build a plan that’s right for you. Think of this as seeing a travel doctor who knows your itinerary as well as you do.

What Is a Travel Health Consultation?

After taking time off work and traveling to our dream getaway, the last thing you want to do is waste time suffering from preventable illness. A travel health consultation is a visit where a healthcare professional reviews your travel plans and helps protect your health before you go. We look at where you’re traveling, how long you’ll be away, and what activities you plan to do. Based on this, we recommend any needed or optional vaccines, and give practical advice to help you avoid illness while traveling.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

We review your travel plans, health history, and vaccine records.

Who Should Book a Travel Consultation?

Even if you’re unsure whether you need travel health advice — book anyway. A short travel medicine consultation can flag risks you wouldn’t otherwise know about, and most patients leave with vaccines already done. You should book if you are:

  • Traveling internationally
  • Visiting family or friends abroad
  • Traveling while pregnant
  • Living with a chronic condition or disability
  • Traveling for work or school
  • Unsure which vaccines you need

Even short trips can carry health risks.

We recommend booking your travel health consultation at least 4–6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines require multiple doses spaced weeks apart — starting early gives you the most options. That said, we also see last-minute travellers and will do everything possible to protect you even if you’re leaving soon.

While pharmacists in Ontario can administer some common travel vaccines, they can’t prescribe anti-malarials, administer yellow fever vacinations, or conduct a destination-specific risk assessment. A dedicated travel health clinic covers all of it in one visit — specialist advice, specialty vaccines, and take-home prescriptions.

Our travel health consultation fee is $85. The injection fee is waived if vaccines are given on the same day as your consultation. Follow-up injection visits are $30 plus vaccine cost. Travel consultations and vaccines are not covered by OHIP, though some private insurance plans may partially cover vaccine costs.

Yes. Destinations Travel Clinic is a certified yellow fever vaccination centre. We administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the official International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) required for entry to many countries.

Ideally, the Hepatitis A vaccine should be given at least 2 weeks before departure to allow time for immunity to develop. Even if you’re leaving sooner, vaccination still reduces your risk and is recommended. The full two-dose series provides long-term protection for future trips as well.

Yes — Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are commonly given together and are safe to administer in the same visit. A combined Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccine (Vivaxim) is also available, providing both protections in a single injection.
